Women Status in India --- The tipping point

At the beginning of the discussion, I would like to give you a detailed introduction of the recently hot document film “India’s Daughter”, and then we could go on with deeper investigation on women’s status in India, which aperiodically cause sensational controversies over the world.

2012 Delhi gang rape: This terrifying event is the base of “India’s Daughter”. A young girl who studied in medical school while taking part-time job until midnight to support the finance of her poor family in a remote area of North India was raped by turns and assaulted on the private bus after she watched a film with her male friend at nine pm. Being seriously hurt by threw out of the speeding bus, she was transferred to Singapore for further treatment; unfortunately, she didn’t make it through after six weeks of the event.

People around the world were shocked and started to pay attention on women status issues in every country, especially in South Asia, Middle East and original tribes in Africa.

India’s Daughter: Conducted by Leslee Udwin, this an- hour long documentary included background of both victims and assailants and the interviews with the death-sentenced rapists in the jail, which is the biggest contention of the documentary. During the interview, the rapists and their attorneys kept humiliating women and emphasized the “justice” they had done and the “lesson” all Indian women should learn from the raped girl. After the trailer broadcasted, the reputation toward India’s men became worse and the expectation of the public audience became higher. 

                                                        

However, the video was prohibited from delivering by the ban of the Indian Government. With the “concern” of triggering protections and causing panics, the Indian Government interdicted the documentary’s broadcasting not only in the nation but also the world by warning the international media like Google and Youtube. Out of the daydream they made, the consequence of Indian Government’s actions led to a series of demonstrations and condemnation from other countries.
